The pencil drawing is an exercise in visual expression. It can produce linear strokes in any colour if the pencil is a coloured one. We can shade and draw as we wish. Thus the pencil is a very fertile medium. It is called the gateway to the art of painting. In past, the drawings were done as preparatory work for the final paintings.

Nowadays pencil drawing itself has become a full-fledged branch of art. Now a day with the invention of a new kind of graphite and coloured pencils along with charcoal, the art of drawing has become an art in itself. For an artist, a watercolourist or even an oil painter, the pencil drawing operates as a launching pad.

In the beginning, you would require some basic material. A set of artists-grade pencils, a couple of good quality erasers, and a bunch of not-so-costly drawing papers. You can switch over to finer and costlier drawing papers as you travel some miles on the path of pencil drawing.

How to Draw A Lion: Pencil drawing     When an artist looks at the animals, the first thought he or she faces is that he/she should draw that pretty animal. But when we look at a lion, we know that artwork or a poster of the Lion should be on the walls of our homes.

The lion is different from any other animal. Unlike other animals, we cannot draw a portrait of a lion in keeping the pretty animal open before our eyes. It should be caged, or the artist himself or herself should be caged. You know to draw a lion we have to go to a zoo if we want to draw it live. Isn't it? Well, a good poster would do.

Thus it is the desire of the artists to draw animals. Here the artist Andrea Moore has used his talents as an artist and has done this pencil drawing.

Look at the display of the art of pencil. The lining and shading work done by Andrea is superb. The curve of the hair on the face gives a realistic look to the whole portrait of the lion.

To give our work such a finished look we must do every aspect of the drawing precisely with skill. There should be no hurry; no impatience.

Figurative Drawing: If you want to draw your pet it is a figurative drawing. so to draw a lion is a figurative drawing. Take it like that. Anything you like, anything you feel inspired by would do. Just make sure about the size of the object and how far it is lying from you, near to you or at a distance.

Drawing Tips   Before starting the first line on your drawing paper, you should have some basic ideas about what you want to draw. It is because you will require drawing paper according to the size of the object to draw and the quality of the drawing you want to draw. You can proceed with that basic idea.

  • If you are to do much shading work, choose paper with a rough surface. It holds the graphite of the pencil and creates a sense of volume.
  • If your work is mainly the lining, then the smooth paper would be better. It helps in creating a drawing with a uniform lining.

Let us take one example of line drawing and shading. Here is one of the most wonderful pencil drawings I have seen.

For Beginners:   Are you a beginner? Welcome to the world of at. The pencil is the first friend of every artist. What about the subject to draw? What can I draw, if I am a novice? Is that the query in your mind? Do not worry, at all. You would certainly find a suitable subject and a set of objects to draw.

In the beginning, it is advisable to draw homely objects; it can be your table; it can be your table clock; it can be your wet towel or it can be your hanging pyjamas. While doing a pencil drawing the choice of objects to draw is hardly a problem. You are to just look around in the area you are sitting or standing. The easiest objects would be geometrically-shaped materials like balls, cricket bats, cricket sticks, kitten utensils and similar things. The geometrical figures will make the beginners' work easier.

Pencil Drawing of Wild Animals: Lion         If you wish to draw the face of a lion, like a portrait, it would be better to paint only the face and no other parts of his body. The whole drawing would look roundish due to the hair on the face, but the face itself would look oval-shaped.

Take care to draw the lines bolder. Compared to the thinner lines, the bolder ones would impart strength to the drawing. Have you marked while seeing the lion? The upper jaw of a lion looks always puffy. The lower jaw is flat. Mark it carefully, the nose line would always be straight. It would come from upside to downward. Take care that the nose-line should look beginning from the centre of the eyes.

An imaginative shading would make a good difference. You should draw the shadow of the nose-tip on the opposite side from which the light is falling on the face. Other shadings, if required would make the portrait of a lion alive. Other things would be as usual as in the case of drawing different animals. You can draw a cat, a dog, a monkey, a cow, a horse or any animal in this manner.

Here is a short video, taken from YouTube. It will help me learn to draw a lion.
